India Gate

Honoring Fallen Soldiers
India Gate was built as a war memorial to honor the soldiers of the British Indian Army who lost their lives during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Thousands of Indian soldiers served in various parts of the world during these conflicts.

Foundation Stone Laid
The foundation stone of India Gate was laid in 1921 by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. The monument was conceived as a lasting tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.

Designed by Edwin Lutyens
The memorial was designed by renowned architect Edwin Lutyens, who was also responsible for planning several important structures in New Delhi. His design was inspired by classical triumphal arches.

Completion of the Monument
After several years of construction, India Gate was completed in 1931. The names of thousands of soldiers were inscribed on its walls as a mark of remembrance.

Addition of Amar Jawan Jyoti
Following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the Amar Jawan Jyoti was established beneath the archway to honor India’s unknown soldiers. It became one of the country’s most important military memorials.

National Landmark Today
Today, India Gate serves as both a historic monument and a popular public gathering space. It remains a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice, and national pride.
